Frequent Flyer Program

The official name of the frequent flyer program of American Airlines is AAdvantage which started in the year 1981. The miles earn by the members can be used to book flight tickets, upgrades, shopping, cars and hotels.

AAdvantage Status are classified as follows: Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum.

Elite members of AAdvantage are eligible for separate check-in, free cabin upgrades and priority waitlist. The AAdvantage program is also associated with the co-branding of credit cards with several international banks.

Baggage: American Airlines allows one carry-on bags along with a personal item. The recommended size of the carry-on bag is 45 linear inches as it should fit the overhead bin or the seat underneath. Apart from the carry-on bags, if there is a checked baggage it will go under the plane and will cost $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second bags.   The size of the checked bag should not exceed 62 linear inches (Wheels and handles included). The weight limit of the checked baggage is 50 lbs. Any bags beyond the allotted size and weight limit may invite a penalty of $ 150.00 per bag.

American Airlines Check-in

Check-in with American Airlines will open online within 24 hours of the flight departure. Passengers may check in for the flight online the day before the flight at the comfort of your home and print out the boarding pass. This will save the passengers from the trouble of standing in long queue. Checking in online is recommended as one will be able to assign seats and pay for the bags online. It will also provide an option for pre booking of the in-flight services.

American Airlines also provides Kiosk check in at the airports where kiosk is available. Passengers can access their flight reservation at the kiosk by entering the confirmation number and the names. It will prompt for check-in. Follow the steps given at the kiosk. Choose your seat and add the bags as advised. Finally once the check in is complete, boarding pass can be printed out from the kiosk.

For those who wish to check in manually, it is available at the American Airline desk. Airport Check in is open 4 hours from the time of departure of the flight. You may walk up to the American Airlines counter and a representative with assist you with the check in process. And the boarding pass will be printed out for you. It is the one and only hard copy that you require to board the plane.

American Airlines flight change

All American Airlines tickets are refundable within 24 hours of booking the flight. After 24 hours depending on the type of fare you have booked, the terms and conditions will be activated. Apart from the basic economy fare, the non-refundable tickets are eligible to change with a penalty of $ 200.00 per passenger. The change fee may cost higher if it is a restricted ticket or an international destination. American Airlines change penalty is standard, as compared to the other major carriers like Delta Airlines and United Airlines operating in United States.

The tickets are good for one year from the date of issue. All flight must be commenced before the expiration of the ticket. The ticket cannot be transferred from one person to another. At the time of booking the reservation before making the payment, please go through the terms and condition of the fares that you are going to book.

It is advisable to add flight insurance if the booking is made a long way in advance. Insurance will prove helpful in case of medical emergency and other unforeseen circumstances. The coverage details are provided by the Insurance partners at the time of booking. It generally cost around 14% of the ticket cost depending on the type of coverage. It majorly covers, medical, cancellation, change, delays, mis-connect and baggage loss and delay.
